My journey has taken me across the ocean and through numerous towns before I became the Twisted Sister I am today. I was born in England and moved to Canada when I was six. My family stayed in Nashville, Ontario for a few years before moving to Wildfield, Ontario where my dad had built a house for us. I am the oldest of nine children. I left Wildfield and got married, had 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. It’s been a journey.
I worked at the Right House when I first came to Brantford. I was there for quite a few years in the cosmetics department which I loved. When they went bankrupt, I decided to go into a new career and put myself through hairdressing school in Kitchener.
After I finished school, I was hired as an apprentice in a Kitchener salon. I had a great clientele however, after 10 years the drive was just getting to be too much. I decided to return to Brantford and build a new clientele. Fifteen years later I have a really good job at Twisted Sisters on Dunsdon Street and have rebuilt my clientele again. They are an extension of my family. Some are a challenge, but I love them all.
Specializing in Colours and Perms
You have to know your colours. Every time someone sits in my chair and wants a colour, it’s custom made. I ask them questions and it does make a difference in the outcome of the colour. There’s a lot of colours for my clients to choose from and as a stylist it is our job to know what each colour does. I have certain colours for people who have scalp sensitivity. Sometimes, it’s a process to get the colour the client wants to achieve and therefore it may take more than one trip to the salon. I’m lucky that the clients in my salon understand that.
When it comes to older people or those who have thin, fine hair, a perm can really help add volume to their hair. Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s we used to do a lot of perms for both male and female clientele. Today, it is mainly older female clients who want to have their hair permed, however, we are seeing a resurgence of younger people wanting curly hair.
Blending Colours With Perms
When clients want a perm and a colour at the same time it becomes tricky. You have two chemical services on your hair and sometimes that can really compromise the hair or dry it out. Also, the colour isn’t going to be as nice as it should be because the perm will dull it somewhat. I sometimes have to deliver bad news as a hairdresser and let the client know they are going to be compromising the look they are trying to achieve. I have to know when to say “no”.
If you are looking for a perm, colour, cut, or even a colour correction, come and see me today. No matter what look you are trying to achieve, we can help you look your best with a unique style you can only find at Twisted Sisters.
